Tattoo Questions
Our greatest requests are for custom, one-of-a-kind tattoos. Our artists are well rounded and are very experienced in
all types of artwork from the traditional style to the most popular styles such as Japanese, fine-line black & grey, tribal,
new colorful and realistic.
Our artists have also created unique tattoo flash. “Flash is the term used to describe the design sheets that you see on
the walls and in racks at tattoo studios. We have our own original tattoo flash sets available here at the studio for sale
and we are constantly creating new ones. Please check our galleries to get an idea of the tattoos we have created
come in the studio to see our selection of flash..
I recommend that you have an idea of what you want, but it is not necessary. Our artist can also help you create an
original piece for scratch. Sometimes we have found it helpful to do some research before you come.
Absolutely! Come down to our studio so a colleague or artist can help you with your design or give us a call at
(206) 767-1163 and we will set up an appointment for you.
A consultation is a free-of charge, 15+ minute meeting with a DZUL artist or colleague where you can discuss your
ideas, bring in any reference art you may have and ask any questions you may have about your design or the process
in general, get an estimated price as well as the amount of time it may take for your tattoo. From there, if you’d like to
go forward with the tattoo a Dzul colleague can book your appointment.
If your tattoo appointment has already been setup and your deposit has already been made you can communicate with
a DZUL colleague or artist to send/receive photos and artwork through email.
Call us at 206.767.1163 to book your appointment or to answer any questions you may have. Walk-ins are welcome.
We charge by the piece, not by the hour.
We require that you come in for a consultation for any cover-up. Also it’s always good to have a few ideas of what
you want to cover it up with. Bring any ideas & artwork you may have although it is not necessary for you tattoo. We
also have 100’s of tattoo designs to choose from here at the studio. The artist/colleague will give you suggestions as
needed to come up with the best results for your cover-up or reworked tattoo.
Many scars can be covered up but some cannot. There is no certainty that the scarred tissue will take the ink properly.
We require that you come in for a consultation for any tattoos that will be going over scars or stretch marks, we will
be able to give you a better answer for the results of your tattoo once you come into the studio to have our colleague
or artist take a look at your scar in person to give you more feedback. We also recommend contacting your doctor if
it is a recent scar, to see if it is appropriate to get a tattoo over your scar.
We do not offer neon or black light ink tattoos at our studio at this point. We may in the future.
Walk-ins are welcome, we encourage everyone to come in and check our work, studio and speak with one of our
colleague or artists, although due to the demand for tattoos and the time it takes to create great work, if your
appointment takes more than 30 minutes we may need to setup an appointment depending on our schedule availability.
A deposit is required to guarantee your appointment. The deposit will be applied to the full amount of your tattoo
price. Click here for more in-depth tattoo deposit policies.
For custom tattoos the deposit is 1/3 or 1/2 of your tattoo estimate depending on the work preparation. There is a
$50 minimum for non-custom tattoos, which is applied to the full amount of your tattoo price.

tattoo, please book your appointment as soon as possible to reserve a desirable time.
If you have artwork selected we suggest you bring all reference artwork pertaining to your tattoo, although its not
necessary, we have lots of artwork at our studio and have the ability to customize a one of a kind design from scratch

ID, or Passports are all accepted).
Everyone’s definition of “hurt” is different because everyone feels pain differently. Unfortunately, there is no real
measure of pain that we can give you without being disingenuous. Some people say that it feels like a cat scratch and
afterwards it feels like a sunburn. Different parts of your body will be more sensitive that others, usually bony parts or
areas with thin skin.
After your tattoo is done, we will give you a brochure. This brochure is a list of our suggested aftercare for your
tattoo. The artist will explain the aftercare suggestions. If you have any further questions, please give us a call, and will
answer questions you may have.
It typically takes about 2-3 weeks for a tattoo to heal if you follow the proper aftercare suggestions from your artist.
According to the American Red Cross, there is a 12-month wait period after receiving a tattoo to be able to donate
blood. Talk to a medical professional for detailed information or contact the Red Cross.
We do not sell any tattoo supplies; we are not a tattoo supplier.
If you can’t find an answer to your question within or Q&A & Policies in the different sections, then please use our
contact form to send us a message and we will get back to you with a swift reply and helpful answers.
Tattoo Policies
Age & Identification Policies
- It is Washington State law that you must be 18 years of age or older to get a tattoo. You will be asked to present a valid, legal ID before we will start work. We do not advocate the tattooing of anyone under the age of eighteen.
- You must bring state or federal photo ID every time you come in for any tattoo. If you arrive for a tattoo appointment without proper ID, you will not get tattooed and you will lose your deposit money. Acceptable forms of ID include: driver's license, state issued non-driver ID card, military ID, embassy issued ID, passport, or learner's permit (if it has a photo on it).
General Tattoo Policies
- Tattoo price quotes are only estimates. We do not charge an hourly rate we charge by the tattoo piece. We do our best to stick to the quotes we give, but sometimes, a tattoo can take longer than anticipated for a variety of reasons. You may wind up paying more than what you are quoted. Please come prepared with extra money in case you would like to add or change detail to your design.
- When you schedule a tattoo appointment, a deposit of $50 is required, unless it is a custom design, which requires 1/3 of the tattoo estimate or ½ of the estimate depending on the work preparation. The deposit will be applied to the final price of your tattoo estimate. You can pay in person, or we can process credit/debit card payment over the phone. You must pay the deposit at the time of appointment setup unless authorized by Dzul. If you fail to pay your deposit on time, your appointment will be cancelled.
- We cannot schedule tattoo appointments via email. To make an appointment please call or stop by the studio.
- There is a non-refundable deposit required for all appointments.
- No smoking, please.
- If you are sick, stoned, intoxicated, pregnant, have an attitude, or acting immature, come back when you're not.
- We are a tattoo studio, not a daycare service. Your kids are welcome but you must control them.
- No children permitted in the tattoo areas.
- Our artists work hard to give you the finest work; tattoo tips are always appreciated.
- The anger of a poor-quality tattoo remains long after the sweetness of a low-price is forgotten.
- We do not do gang or racially motivated tattoo designs, so please do not ask.

- If you do not show up for your appointment, you forfeit your deposit and you will have to pay in full to schedule a new appointment.

Touch Ups:
- Touch ups are only free by the artist who originally did your tattoo. If the artist who did your original tattoo at Dzul is no longer here, Another Dzul Artist may touch up your tattoo for free at his/her discretion. However, if the touch up work needed would take more than a few minutes of time, you could be charged. You will be informed whether or not the touch up is free prior to scheduling your appointment. Re-coloring old tattoos done elsewhere is NOT a touch up.
- Touch up appointments do not require a deposit and are free with in 90 days from the original date your tattoo was done unless the tattoo was damaged by your negligence, such as sun exposure or ignoring proper aftercare.
- If you do not show up for a touch up appointment, you will be required to pay $50 payment or whichever amount the artist estimates will be sufficient for the amount of work that needs to be done to schedule a new appointment for a touch up.
- If you do not show up a second time, you will forfeit the $50 payment or whichever amount the artist estimates will be sufficient for the amount of work that needs to be done, and will not be permitted to schedule any further appointments.
Other Things You Should Know
- Skin color will affect the brightness of colors used in a tattoo.
- Variations in color and design may exist between any tattoos you select and as ultimately applied to your body.
- Obtaining a tattoo is by your choice alone. A tattoo is a permanent change to your appearance and no representations can be made to you regarding the ability to change, alter, or remove any tattoo.
Consent/Release Form
- All clients are required to read and sign a "Consent Application of Tattoo and Release and Waive of All Claims form" prior to receiving services from Dzul Tattoo. Please read it carefully and make sure that you understand what you are signing. If you do not understand something in the consent form, do not sign it without asking for clarification first.
Communicable Diseases
- To minimize the risk of infection, our artists do not work when they are ill. We also ask that you postpone your visit to our studio until you are free from any disease that could put other clients or our staff at risk. We want to provide the cleanest, safest environment possible and need your cooperation to do so.
- Additionally, tattooing can tax your immune system. If you are ill, it may increase your recovery time and also put you more at risk for possible infection or other health-related complications.
Drinking and Drugs
- We do not tattoo anyone known to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol and/or drugs will thin your blood, which can lead to excessive bleeding. If you are taking prescribed medications, please tell your artist ahead of time.
Medical Conditions
- If you are under the care of a physician for a medical condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, please tell your artist ahead of time. If a medical emergency arises while you are at our studio, we will be better prepared to handle it. We require a written letter signed by your physician, with their contact information, noting that you have discussed getting a tattoo done.
Pregnant Women
- We do not tattoo pregnant women. Everything that goes into your body can affect your unborn baby. Potential allergic reactions or infections could also put you and your baby at risk. The process may also affect your immune system and its ability to help you fight off infection. You should also delay your new tattoo if you are nursing. We want you and your baby to be as healthy as possible.
Safe Guarding Your Health - Our Procedures
Listed below are some of the procedures we use to provide the safest, most sterile conditions possible for your new tattoo or piercing. If you have any questions regarding the tattooing process, don't hesitate to ask.
Disposable Gloves
- All our artists wear standard medical nitrile gloves during the tattooing process.
Inks and Pigments
- All inks and pigments used for your tattoo are poured from its universal container into brand new, sterile ink caps. Once the artist has finished your tattoo, the ink caps are discarded in your presence. We DO NOT pour the remaining ink back into the universal container.
Needles
- We use brand new, hospital-sterilized, disposable needles for each and every client. The artist will show you the sterile packaging and will open it only in your presence. Once the artist is finished with your tattoo, the needle is disposed of into a sharps container.
Non-disposable Equipment
- All non-disposable equipment, such as tubes and other metal equipment, is sterilized following strict health and safety guidelines in our in-studio working autoclave. Autoclaving is the only form of sterilizing accepted in the United States for medical instruments. Autoclave bags are opened only in your presence. If you have questions or concerns regarding the sterilization process we use, just ask. We will be happy to step you through it.
Razors
- The artist will usually prepare the area to receive a tattoo by shaving the area. We use brand new, disposable, safety razors for each client and dispose of them immediately.
Making You Aware - The Risks
While tattooing and piercing is considered generally safe and we take all possible precautions to safeguard your health, there are known risks associated with the process. Research all the risks associated with tattoos to learn about the things you should look for when selecting a studio.
Allergic Reactions
You may experience an allergic reaction to the dyes, pigments, and processes used in tattooing. We cannot determine or guarantee that you will not have an allergic reaction. If you are unsure or concerned, start with a small tattoo first. However, this still will not guarantee that you will not experience an allergic reaction to larger tattoos.
Bacterial Infection
Tattoos can lead to bacterial infections, particularly if they are not properly cared for. Following our aftercare suggestions can help reduce the risk of infection. However, if your immune system is depressed because of illness or you have an allergy to any part of the process, your risk for infection is greater. If you have any questions regarding the care of your tattoo, stop by the studio to speak with a colleague or artist, or give us a call.
Viral Diseases
Obtaining a tattoo from a "dirty" studio or from an untrained friend or relative can often be the culprit of a viral disease. We follow all safety guidelines required to help prevent cross-contamination.
